Some places truly represent their neighborhoods in the best way possible. Venice's James' Beach restaurant and bar is definitely one of these places. Happily set up next to a tattoo parlor is an all white building with "James' Beach†spelled out in a joyful neon blue illuminated sign. Just off the intersection of Venice Blvd. and Pacific Ave., this spot exudes all the cool effortlessness of Venice. Though you won't get any real ocean views at James' Beach, you will get all the beach attitude and appeal. It is an excellent spot to people watch for all the zany characters that create Venice. The deliciously quaint and unforced vibe that encompasses this venue has had people clamoring to get in since it opened nearly two decades ago. Cute multi-colored string lights hung up haphazardly outside on the patio give this spot a real homey feel- almost as if you've just stepped into a really cool cook out in your neighbor's backyard. Generally filled with young artsy locals, James' Beach is perfect for people looking to enjoy some brews while they take in the neighborhood's character and charm. The ambiance is so chill and inviting, it's no wonder that this place has been featured in tons of L.A. based movies like Paul Rudd's "I Love You Man.†Though all the Christmas lights and the music attempt to make you feel like you're on vacation when you walk in, they really do a better job of making you feel like you're at home (or at least like you're in your own super cool hideout). Less than a block from the beach, James' Beach is the ultimate place to submerse your self in the Venice tradition by getting relaxed and maybe a little weird while drinking awesome things like Sparkling Blackberry Sangria or a Venice Beach Adult Lemonade.
