Forget Old Hollywood. Sassafras effectively brings the old South back to the L.A. area with live bands, banjo-style music, hand crafted mixed drinks and 1920's/1930's New Orleans style venue that just can't be beat. Anybody that visits this spot off of Vine and Fountain will immediately fall under its Southern spell.
If there's one element that's crucial for pulling off some romance, it’s charm. And if there's one place that's known for their masterful ability to pull off an almost saccharine amount of charm, it’s the Old South. Heralded for having amazing drawling accents and an even more amazing aptitude for hospitality, the Deep South (circa 1920) really knows what it means to set the mood. Hollywood has got its very own corner of this era in their little neighborhood bar, aptly named Sassafras. While themed bars often have to work hard not to come off as cheesy, Sassafras skillfully comes off as authentic, romantic and transportive. Walking through their heavy wooden door, you’ll feel as though you’re actually stepping back in time. With actual moss lazily hanging from the ceilings and perfectly worn in and mismatched chairs circling delightfully creaky tables, Sassafras will remind you and your date of a time when courting was actually a thing, and people treated each other with a modicum of decency. It's hard not to want to pull out the chair for your date when surrounded by so much of the South's alluringly charismatic past. Sometimes playing live bluesy music with bands looking the part of old Southern gentlemen, the bygone era of Sassafras will remind you that dating can still be fun and romantic, even if you're in Hollywood in the new millennium. Go early before it gets too crowded.
