The Whisky A Go Go, or the Whisky for short, made a name for itself starting with the Doors, who had a residency there in 1966. The Whisky gave tons of the British invasion guys their first headlining show, including The Kinks, The Who, Cream, Led Zeppelin and Roxy Music. The Whisky became even more of a stalwart in the Los Angeles club scene when Motley Crue wrote "Down at the Whisky" - though it was closed from 1982 - 1986, it reopened in time to give rise to the careers of Guns N Roses, Metallica, and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. They Whisky's always had a knack for booking the right bands at the right time throughout all music eras, so it's always interesting to see who's playing the Whisky now.
These days, the Whisky is showcasing everything from 1980s throwback metal, pop punk, black metal, and rap metal, to singer-songwriter and R&B shows. If you go there on any given night, you're most likely to hear trashy speed metal beating through your ears, but rest assured it'll be a great show. When bands play the Whisky, they know they're playing the world-famous Whisky and they have fun with it! For some local bands, the Whisky is the high point of their careers, for others, it's just the beginning. It's always worth it to stop by and check out the best up-and-coming acts!
