The Kibitz Room is a great little place attached to Canter's Deli on Fairfax. It's one of the few live music venues in that area, so thank God it's a good one! You have to go through the Canter's Deli to get there, and it is a little odd going from a brightly lit old-school Jewish diner to a dim rock n' roll bar (you have the feeling that your Bubby is somewhere in Canter's, obscured in a corner booth, chowing down on corned beef, loudly disapproving to her court.) Once you get over the initial weirdness and get swallowed into the Kibitz Room atmosphere, all is well. Cheap drinks, good music, and a chill bartender describe this place well. Its bowling-alley-like set-up has the bands playing at an awkward angle to the room, but the best bands can easily overcome this. This is mainly a rock n' roll/punk venue, although the ubiquitous indie bands have been known to play here on the odd night. There's a minimal or free cover charge (Tuesdays is free), and it's definitely worth the music. It's a dive bar to the nth degree, but overall it's a cool place to hang out if you're looking for a low-key night of music, booze, and bar scene.
